International Mining Expert arrives in Ghana

Accra, May 14, GNA - An American International Geo-Chemist and Hydrological Expert, Dr Robert Moran arrived in the country on Saturday to offer specialist advice on the consequences of mining on the environment.

Dr Moran is billed to lecture at an Environmental Workshop, assess the impact of mining, especially at Wassa District and other mining communities.

The lecture is being organised by Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM), a Ghanaian non-governmental organization. Dr Moran would also talk on the effect of mining chemical spillage, environmental friendly mining process as well as local citizens' rights and privileges for approval of mining permits and the long-term financial benefits.

The International Expert told journalists on arrival at the Airport that residents of mining communities would be trained in the use of simple mining equipment for water analysis.

He expressed the hope that the government, communities and non-governmental organisations would join the crusade to ensure sanity in mining communities, especially disposal of hazardous waste. Whilst in Ghana, Dr Moran and his team, which includes Mr Madou Biteye a Senior Programme manager of OXFAN America would visit mining communities, including the Wassa West district to acquaint himself about the extent of environmental degradation.

The delegation was meet on arrival by WACAM Executive Director, Mr Daniel Owusu-Koranteng.
