The United States of America government has called for an investigation into four election-related deaths that occurred during and after the elections on Saturday, December 7, 2024, in certain parts of the country.
In a statement dated December 9, 2024, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed condolences to the families who tragically lost their loved ones during Ghana's elections.
He emphasised the need for full accountability to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and to ensure measures are put in place to prevent similar occurrences in future elections.
Blinken further condemned the reported cases of isolated incidents of violence in some constituencies, which have marred the peaceful election.
“We are aware of reports of isolated incidents of violence and at least four confirmed deaths. The United States extends our condolences to the families of those killed and urges a full investigation and accountability,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the USA has congratulated President-Elect John Dramani Mahama on his election victory, as well as his Vice, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, for making history as Ghana's first female vice president.
Additionally, Blinken praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for conceding defeat even before the official declaration by the Electoral Commission, commending him for his statesmanship in accepting the results.
“The United States congratulates President-elect John Mahama on his successful election campaign, following the declaration of results by Ghana’s Electoral Commission. We extend further congratulations to Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on becoming Ghana’s first female vice president. The United States commends the Electoral Commission, its hundreds of thousands of poll workers, civil society, and the country’s security forces, who helped ensure a peaceful and transparent process. We also applaud Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the results.”
The statement added, “The United States is proud of our enduring partnership and friendship with the people and government of Ghana. We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to carry our historic relationship into the future.”
Despite its success, the 2024 general election was marred by violence and the tragic deaths of some individuals. In Nyankpala, a shooting incident resulted in a fatality, while a similar tragedy occurred in Kasoa, within the Awutu Senya East constituency, according to official police reports.
Several other institutions and locations were also vandalized, with agitated individuals looting items from the NADMO office and destroying ballot boxes.
In response, the police have arrested eight suspects linked to the various incidents.
