Irate youth beat up armed robbers at Wassa Essikuma

Wassa Essikuma (W/R), GNA — Five armed robbers, who attempted to rob traders travelling on a 207 bus from Prestea to Kumasi, were mercilessly beaten up by some irate youth from Wassa Essikuma in the Western Region.

Confirming the incident to the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview on Monday, DSP Ben Wonyi, Prestea District Divisional Police Commander, said the incident happened at Wassa Essikuma, near Wassa Akropong, on Sunday dawn.

He said the alleged robbers shot the driver of the vehicle and stopped the 207 bus ,adding that, the poor road network also contributed to the attack because the vehicle was moving slowly.

DSP Wonkyi noted that, some of the passengers managed to escape to the town to spread the news about the armed robbery attack and mobilised the youth to the scene of the robbery.

He said the youth were armed to the teeth and mercilessly beat up the five-armed robbers and inflicted deep wounds on their heads with machete.

But for the timely intervention of the police, the robbers would have been lynched by the youth, DSP Wonkyi added.

He said the driver of the vehicle and the five alleged armed robbers had been admitted at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital receiving treatment while investigation is underway.
