Some angry youth of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency in the Upper East Region, this afternoon threatened to beat up the party’s chairman, George Ayanure.

According to them Mr. Ayanure was seen openly canvassing votes for one of the aspirants in the race.

Even though the incumbent Member of Parliament, Isaac Adongo and the other aspirant George Gamson were not present at the Catholic Social Center where the election is taking place Mr. Ayanure according to eyewitnesses was seen asking delegates to “vote for candidate number 2”, who is his favorite.

This angered some party faithfuls believed to be sympathisers of Mr. Adongo who threatened to beat up the aged constituency Chairman. Some police officers present at the polling station however intervened and whisked the party chairman out of the center.

The Constituency Secretary, Roland Atanga Ayoo who spoke to A1 News condemned the act of the the party’s chairman which he said was contrary to the party’s guidelines.

“It is unfortunate that someone of his caliber will be seen doing something like that. I’m sad. This is an internal election and we don’t expect someone, especially the chairman to tell delegates to vote for a particular candidate at the same place the election was ongoing. That was unfortunate”.

Meanwhile the Regional Election Committee Chairman, Donatus Nyaaba who could not confirm the incident said if the constituency chairman was seen openly canvassing votes as alleged for a candidate that was unfortunate.

Mr. Nyaaba described the process of electing candidates for the party as peaceful in all the 15 constituencies of the region. According to him only Builsa South and Bawku Central constituencies that candidates are going unopposed.

The NDC Regional Women Organiser, Hajia Charity in an interview with A1 NEWS called on delegates to vote for competent candidates who can well represent them in parliament.

“Delegates should not just vote for a candidate but they should vote for someone who can join John Dramani Mahama to win the 2020 elections. We want a candidate who can articulate the views of the constituents well in parliament."

Meanwhile efforts to get the the party chairman for his response proved futile.

The parliamentary election which started a bit late in some constituencies is expected to end at 5pm.
