With many married couples in Ghana struggling with childbirth, some have resorted to IVF and other available alternatives to conceive and have children they can call their own.

While societal norms in Africa often place the burden of infertility on women, medical experts have clarified that men can also contribute to fertility challenges due to conditions like low sperm count or other factors that may lead to infertility.

Some couples therefore turn to sperm banks to purchase strong sperm for an IVF procedure to help them conceive.

This development has created a thriving business for many young men in Ghana and Kofi Adoma Nwanwani caught up with one of these men for an interview.

The sperm donor, Nana Kofi Amoako, who revealed he had already donated his sperm about 15 times, said it is very sad for a woman to get married and not be able to conceive, hence his decision to venture into the business.

“What gives women joy in marriage is childbirth so I have made it a point to donate to anyone who needs a child.”

He said many young men, after having sex, throw away the sperm but he found that unacceptable as there are many women out there who need children.

“Instead of just throwing it away, we’ll give it to someone who needs a child.”

He shared how they go about it: "We have the kind of food we eat to increase our sperm count. Also, before you donate, you need to abstain from sex for about 4 days in order to get enough sperm when you donate.”

Nana Kofi who said eating gari and coconut helps him produce more, revealed that he earns between GH¢ 2,000 to GH¢3,000 for each donation.

Aside from donating the sperm at a sperm bank, Nana Kofi also does home insemination.

Explaining his process of home insemination, he said some women who don’t want to go through the stress of artificial insemination, contract him to sleep with them so they can get pregnant.

“We both carry out some tests first to confirm that none of us have any sexually transmitted disease then we meet at a neutral ground for the deal and after that, we go our separate ways.”

Asked how they go about the sex, Nana Kofi said “Some women enjoy the sex and even come for another session.”

He revealed that out of the three times he had done that home insemination, he only met the husband of one of his clients.
