The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has cautioned people who sell sanitizers to desist from taking advantage of the demand for the product in the wake of the coronavirus crises.
According to the Gender Minister, it is not fair for traders to capitalize on the pandemic to over-price hand sanitizers as it interferes with the global goal of fighting the spread of the virus.
“I don’t think this is the right time for us to make money out of this thing that has invaded our community,” she said.
She also added that the increase in the prices of the product will affect a lot of Ghanaians and they may be unable to afford it.
“We realize that now the prices are skyrocketing we cannot afford to buy. What we used to buy for GH¢6 and GH¢8 is now going for GH¢85 and GH¢100,” she said.
Mrs. Morrison unveiled the role of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in fighting the spread of the virus, which is; educating people to make their own sanitizers and not be victims of sanitizer over-pricing.
“The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is a mother Ministry so we are taking steps to show the whole world or the whole country how to prepare homemade sanitizers. We are using alcohol (ethanol) and we are also using glycerine,” she stated.
She also suggested that Ghanaians should resort to chewing cocoa beans as it can help boost their immune systems, which is a requisite for fighting the virus.
“We have heard that we have to build our immune systems so it can fight against this virus. How do we build our immune systems? We have cocoa in Ghana, the bitter cocoa also builds our immune system. We can even chew the cocoa beans or buy the powdered cocoa and then drink for beverage, for lunch, and for supper,” she concluded.
