Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has brushed off claims by Klottey-Korley MP, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, indicating that government is politicizing relief items, particularly food to persons suffering from the restrictions imposed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

There were earlier reports by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP condemning state agents who demanded evidence of party affiliation before feeding some Ghanaians.

But Mr. Oppong Nkrumah has reacted to the above claims, labeling it as ‘political gimmicks’ from the opposition’s camp.

In an interview with TV3, the Information Minister said such claims are unsubstantiated and need to be validated.

“We have to validate it. If someone comes up to say in the midst of the crowd, where even social distancing is not observed and says party cards are being inspected, then it is questionable. Now is not time to play political gimmicks. Even if you are a politician providing food, it is not the time to play gimmicks. The evidence that we are seeing at first glance makes it difficult to believe,” he stated

According to him, the fact that people are not observing social distancing is what needs to be given much precedence.

“At this time, the biggest problem is that people are not even observing social distancing, which we are very unhappy about. Yesterday some guidelines were put out on how to observe social distancing, we’re going to continue with that. We’ll make sure this problem is been tackled,” he added.
