A cross section of drivers at the 37 Military bus station have stated their approval for the suspension of the intended strike by Organised Labour against illegal mining galamsey.

According to them, a strike will not solve galamsey even though they agreed that its effects are worrying and have dire consequences on the environment.

Organised labour threatened to embark on an indefinite strike to demand that the government attends to the issue of galamsey as soon as possible.

But in a dramatic turn of events, Organized Labour has suspended its planned strike, initially scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The decision to suspend the strike follows a contentious meeting held by Organized Labour, during which members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and other unions staged a walkout.

The strike was expected to put pressure on the government to act swiftly on labor demands, particularly as illegal mining continues to pose significant environmental and economic challenges.

Speaking on GhanaWeb TV, one driver said: “When they go on strike, health workers and police also go on strike, there will be chaos in the country. They can do something about it, but this is not the right time. With some few days to elections, the time is not right.”

Even though some of the drivers said they support the suspension of the strike, others recommended that Organised labour should have a dialogue with the government and only proceed to strike if it becomes very necessary.
