The Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey will occupy the highest office of the land - President of the Republic of Ghana - from Sunday when President Kufuor leaves for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Brisbane, Australia. He will take charge till the President or Vice President Aliu Mahama returns to the country from their foreign engagements.
The Vice President who should have acted in the absence of the President is currently performing the Moslem annual pilgrimage to Mecca as head of Ghana’s delegation.
The constitution of Ghana stipulates that the Speaker of Parliament shall act in the absence of the President or his vice. On August 25, last year, when the President, his vice and the Speaker of Parliament were all out of the country, the Chief Justice who is the fourth in line acted for a day.
...Two-day Visit To Singapore Ahead Of Commonwealth Meeting In Australia
President Kufuor is due to embark on a two-day visit to Singapore tomorrow ahead of his scheduled meeting with heads of government in Commonwealth countries in Australia.He would hold discussions with the Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong in a bid to further develop productive and collaborative relations between Ghana and the South East Asian country.
The President will address the business community in Singapore and meet potential investors to brief them on investment opportunities in Ghana.
After his 2-day stay in Singapore, President Kufuor would attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Coolum, Australia, for the first time since assuming office.
The meeting, held every two years, was postponed last year following the 'September 11' attacks in the US to March 2nd to the 5th.
Issues to be discussed include the review of Global developments with focus on terrorism, global economic developments and the promotion of Commonwealth fundamental political values.
The President’s trip abroad late tomorrow evening is the 28th in his 14 months in office.
