The leader of the National Democratic Congress, Prof. John Atta Mills, has congratulated President Kufuor on his election as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). President Kufuor was elected to the position at the just-ended ECOWAS summit in Senegal.

In a statement, Prof. Mills said President Kufuor’s election is in recognition of the role Ghana has played and continues to play in the affairs of the sub-region, especially in the area of peace-keeping.

''Since the days of the NDC, Ghana has played a leading role in ensuring peace in our sub-region. We have always also been a strong voice in regional integration efforts. It is a credit to our nation and we have not only a Ghanaian Executive Secretary of ECOWAS, Dr Ibn Chambas, but now also a Chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State,'' Professor Atta Mills said.

He wished President Kufuor a successful tenure of office. Prof. Mills is hopeful that under President Kufuor’s leadership, the crisis in the Ivory Coast will be resolved while moves to establish single monetary zone in the sub-region are concretized.
