A political aide to Dr. Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has described former President John Mahama as the kingpin of corruption in response to attempts by some within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to run down the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During an interview on GhOne TV, monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Kofi Tonto cited the Saglemi Housing Project, which was started in 2012 by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under John Mahama.

In reference to the Saglemi project, Kofi Tonto tagged John Mahama as the kingpin of corruption.

"This is a man who came to tell us that he was going to build a $10 billion city in Ghana. What happened to STX, even the Saglemi? John Mahama took $200 million from Credit Suisse to build 5,000 homes.

"But built only 1,513 homes as against 5,000 homes. Where's the rest of the money? John Mahama is the kingpin of corruption," he accused.

According to reports, this project was to ease the accommodation deficit in Ghana.

Credit Suisse funded the project after the Parliament of Ghana approved it on October 13, 2012, in accordance with Article 181(1) of the Ghanaian Constitution of 1992.

Collins Dauda, the then-Minister of Water Resources, Works, and Housing, signed the Engineering Procurement and Construction Agreement with Construtora OAS Ghana Limited, represented by Clocanas, on January 4, 2013, marking the signing of a facility agreement between the borrower and lender, the Ministry of Finance, for the release of $200 million to fund the construction of the 5,000 housing units.

Former President John Mahama cut the sod on the first phase of the Housing Project in November 2013, calling it the most ambitious housing project in the West African sub-region.
