Pictures of a mammoth crowd of NDC faithfuls meeting and cheering Prof Joshua Alabi, a Presidential Hopeful in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) hit social media on Saturday.

The pictures of the event captured a multitude of NDC branch executives drawn from the La Dadekotopon constituency, under the supervision of the constituency chairman who was seen in the pictures seated with the Prof and some NDC stalwarts.

Some members of the party’s Council of Elders, Hon Ambassador Victor Gbeho and Rt Hon Ken Dzirasah joined the Joshua Alabi campaign team who met the party executives as evidenced in the pictures circulation on social media.

In a telephone conversation with Hon Nii Amasah Namoale, the former MP of La Dadekotopon, he confirmed the meeting took place on Friday evening in his constituency. He went on to post some of the pictures on his Facebook wall, after the telephone interview.

The NDC MP for Keta, Hon Richard Quashiga and former National Propaganda Secretary of the NDC was also spotted in the pictures to have been in attendance, amongst other activists of the party.

The La Dadekotopon former MP told our reporter that Professor Alabi in his message kept repeating his promise to set up bank accounts for all constituencies to enable them organise party activities without hassle. He said Prof Alabi again promised to build constituency offices for all the 275 constituencies and distribute social benefits to the grassroots under his agenda of ‘Power to the People’.

Hon Namoale however refused to give details as to the nature of campaign that the Joshua Alabi team has adopted for the Greater Accra region and the accompanying time table. “Please, we are having family meetings with our grassroots. We are not doing public shows, rallies or funfairs which demand that we inform or invite the press to follow us.”

Prof Joshua Alabi is contesting for the flagbearership of the NDC alongside former President John Dramani Mahama who lost the 2016 national elections with an unprecedented score of 44.4%. The overwhelming rejection by Ghanaian electorates sent the NDC into a search for the reasons they lost that heavily.

The Prof is the first University Vice Chancellor to make a claim for the Presidency in Ghana after a successful career in Academia. Honoured by Imani Ghana, Association of Bankers, Chartered Institute of Marketing, All Africa Students Union and the Republic of Ghana for his exploits, Prof Joshua Alabi is widely accepted to be the the man giving the former President a run for his money.

A native of Ga with a strong connection to the Northern Region, his roles as Minister of State, Regional Chairman of the NDC, Campaign Manager for the Late Prof John Evans Atta Mills and a University Professor place Joshua Alabi in a unique position.

He appeals to students, teachers, corporate Ghana, cross-section of Ghanaians and members of the NDC who were active during his political leadership days under Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, former President of Ghana.

Others chasing to be recognised as worthy for the position of flagbearership are the former Minority/Majority Leader, Hon Alban Sumani Kingsford Bagbin, former Minister of Communication, Hon Spio Gabrah, former CEO of National Health Insurance, Sylvester Mensah and former Leader and Presidential Candidate of the Reform Party, Goosie Augustus Tandoh.

The rest are Hon Kweku Rickets Hagan, MP Cape Coast South and former Central Regional Minister and Kojo Bonsu, former CEO of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
