True to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's promise to pilot a solar-powered outboard motor ahead of a full implementation next year, a pilot scheme has been successfully run in the Central Region.

The pilot carried out in Apam, saw the outboard motor operated successfully by a solar-powered battery without requiring premix fuel to power it.

About two months ago, during his campaign tour of the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia announced how he had held discussions for the implementation of solar-powered outboard motors to ease fisherfolks across the country from the previous premix fuel problems which have impeded the smooth operations of fisherfolks.

Dr. Bawumia explained that with Ghana blessed with daily sunshine, it was important to make use of the sunshine to address challenges, hence his decision to introduce solar-powered outboard motors for fisherfolks, which he said would not only ease but eradicate the age-old premix fuel challenges but also make the operations of fisherfolks less expensive.

He assured fisherfolks the scheme would be on a pilot before the end of the year and fully take place next year, hopefully under his government.

Following the successful trial in Apam, a number of the solar-powered outboard motors are expected to be distributed to fisherfolks as part of the pilot scheme.

Meanwhile, many fisherfolks have already expressed delight and hailed Dr. Bawumia for this innovation, which they said is a huge relief.
