PPP Director of Operations, Nana Ofori Owusu has descended heavily on former President Jerry John Rawlings over June 4th celebrations.
According to the PPP kingpin, the celebration of June 4th is a painful reminder of the heinous "criminal" activities by Mr. Rawlings during his coup d’état era.
Speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', Nana Ofori Owusu wondered why Ghanaians would "glorify" June 4th after Mr. Rawlings led the overthrows of some administrations during his regime and further masterminded the killings of several people in the nation.
“In April 17, 1966, there was another fair coup attempt. January 13, 1972, Acheampong overthrew Busia. July 5th, 1978, Fred Akufo overthrew Acheampong. June 4th, 1979, Rawlings overthrew Fred Akufo. December 31st, 1981, Rawlings overthrew Limann. So, why do we celebrate June 4th? It is a useless . . . It is a painful activity in the history of Ghana.”
To Nana Ofori, June 4th is nothing better than the mob injustice that has characterized the nation and so not worth celebrating.
He noted that it marks the wickedness of Ex-President Rawlings and his cohort who assisted him to perpetrate crimes against the country.
“We should desist, as a nation, to even talk about June 4th; for us to celebrate coup d’états in the history of our country which has retarded us 60 years after. We’re worse than where we started off. How can we as a people do this? How can we as a people glorify wickedness? How can we as a people glorify excesses in our situation that we go back to the animalistic instinct of man . . . can you imagine this? How can we celebrate such a thing? Such a wicked period in the development of our nation!” he said.
