A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a second year Civil Engineering student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to 15 years imprisonment for causing severe harm to a lady.
Gideon Sarfo alias Sadat, 27, assaulted Adwoa Akomaa, a week after a row ensued between them over some tots of Akpeteshie, a local gin he bought on credit from the victim’s employer at Ayigya in Kumasi.
He is to reappear in court on September 30 to face two other counts of resisting lawful arrest by a public officer and assault on public officer, contrary to sections 69, 205(a), 205(b) of Act 29/60.
The court presided over Justice Emmanuel Amo Yartey gave the verdict after Gideon said to be an ex-convict had pleaded guilty to the count of causing harm and not guilty to the other two charges.
Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Police Chief Inspector Sylvanus D’almeida said on September 8, 2013, at about 4:30pm, the convict in the company of his friends went to the drinking spot to buy alcoholic drink on credit.
Gideon left the spot for another one where he was seen enjoying ‘pito’ whereupon the owner of the first spot sent the victim to go for her money.
In the process, the convict took offense, rained insults on her and poured the ‘pito’ he was drinking on her.
A week later, Gideon met the victim at the compound of Weweso Primary School where he severely assaulted her.
A report was made to the KNUST Police Station and the convict arrested. He struggled with the police while he was being detained and threatened the policemen who were performing their lawful duties.
