Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana have threatened to embark on a strike action to protest a new residential policy, which offers accommodation to only first and final year students.
Under the new policy, first year students who are given accommodation in the halls of residence will be required to move out at the end of the first academic year and continue as non-residents until their final year when they can take residence again on campus. However, the students have kicked against the policy saying it would add to their numerous problems.
The president of the Students Representative Council, Mr. Samuel Laryea has given a deadline of Wednesday 23rd May for the university authorities to withdraw letters directing hall masters and wardens to implement the policy. He told a press conference that if the authorities failed to comply with their demand they would resort to ‘aluta’ (strike).
Mr. Laryea has also appealed to the Ministry of Education, the National Council on Tertiary Education, the government and all stakeholders in tertiary education to intervene in the matter.
