Spokesperson for the 2012 vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Abayifa Karbo, has accused two activists of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being behind the printing and pasting of posters championing the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2016 elections.
Anthony Karbo, who is also the immediate past National Youth Organiser of the NPP, has fingered Emmanuel Saint Osei and Alhaji Mohamed Nasiru as the ones behind the posters, which have popped up in a number of strategic places in Accra.
Mr Karbo made the allegation when he spoke Wednesday on Adom FM’s “Dwaso Nsem” morning show.
According to witnesses, the posters bearing a picture of a smiling Dr Bawumia pasted on a background of NPP colours and bearing the inscription "Bawumia for 2016", began appearing in the evening of Monday September 23, 2013.
It was sponsored by “Friends of Dr. Bawumia.”
The poster has generated a lot of controversies within the opposition NPP and the entire nation.
But Anthony Karbo dismissed the poster campaign as the handiwork of elements within the National Democratic Congress.
Mr Karbo, who is also Convener of the Mass Action Committee, a new pressure group with the primary aim of fighting for the ordinary Ghanaian, insists the campaign is to divert attention and discussion from the impending “astronomical increases in electricity and water tariffs,” but it had failed.
In any case, he pointed out, Dr. Bawumia has not indicated his intention to vie for the party’s flagbearership for now and, therefore, could not have sanctioned the printing of posters to champion his cause.
According to Karbo, Emmanuel Saint Osei and Alhaji Mohamed Nasiru had only engaged in such “mischief” to catch the eye of the NDC executives, and perhaps garner an appointment in the Mahama government.
“They have a track record of promoting such controversies, and I’m very convinced that such people are behind the posters,” Anthony Karbo emphasized.
In a sharp reaction however, Alhaji Mohamed Nasiru has denied any involvement in the poster campaign.
Also speaking on Dwaso Nsem, Alhaji Nasiru said he is interested in strategizing to win a second term for President John Dramani Mahama, and not promoting the chances of Dr. Bawumia.
“I will not waste my time to engage him in that direction, but my occupation is to work and work hard to maintain President Mahama in the 2016 general elections,” he declared.
