Kasapreko Inaugurates planning committee for proposed new district

Asankragwa (W/R), Sept. 16, GNA - Kasapreko Kwame Basanyin III, Omanhene of the Wasa Amenfi Traditional Council and President of the Western Region House of Chiefs at the weekend inaugurated a 13-member Planning Committee in anticipation of the creation of a proposed new district.

The new district is expected to be created from the existing Wasa Amenfi District Assembly, whose district headquarters is currently located at Asankragwa.

The 13-member committee is chaired by Dr. Anthony Bonna Koomson, Senior Lecturer of the University of Ghana, Legon, and currently on sabbatical leave at the Catholic University College of Ghana, Fiapre, Sunyani.

The Committee is to identify and rehabilitate existing official structures in Wasa Akropong, the possible seat of the proposed new district, as office and residential accommodation for the District Assembly and the expected staff of the decentralized district offices.

Nana Kwame Basanyin III charged the Committee to be selfless in the discharge of the duty imposed on them, which he described as "onerous and challenging."

He asked the Committee to co-opt any person, particularly from the traditional area and who in the Committee's opinion, would be of assistance in developing an action plan towards the creation of the new district.

The Committee is to raise 200 million cedis as seed money for the Traditional Council towards the rehabilitation of existing structures, as well as the purchase of furniture and equipment for offices and residential accommodation.

It has four sub-committees, namely Fund-raising committee, chaired by Bawdie Hene, Nana Ntim Bediako II, Human Resource Committee, chaired by Ms. Doris Oduro, tutor at Boa Amponsem Secondary School and the Publicity and Protocol committee, chaired by Mr. George Ntori.

The Committee is scheduled to hold its first business meeting on next October 11 at Wasa-Akropong. The District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Wasa Amenfi District Assembly is expected to address the meeting. The current Wasa Amenfi District stretches southwest from Asankragwa to Juabo in the northern part of the Western Region. It is the third largest district in the country in terms of both land mass and population.
