Kasoa (C/R), Oct. 21, GNA - Public schools at Kasoa are over-crowded following the implementation of the Fee Free Education Programme. This came to light when Mr Solomon Kwashie Abbam-Quaye, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Awutu-Effutu-Senya and Mr Francis Atoh Dughan, District NADMO Co-ordinator paid a surprise visit to the schools on Thursday.
At the District Council (DC) Primary School, some classrooms, which hitherto had low enrolment, now had as many as 150 pupils, while the class with the least number had as much as 94 school children. At the D/C Junior Secondary School, the classroom with the highest number had 84 students while least was 75.
Some of the children were sitting on the floor during the visit and the Teachers appealed for the provision of additional classrooms and furniture.
The DCE promised that the District Assembly would give serious consideration to the request to improve teaching and learning. Mr Abbam-Quaye and Mr Atoh Dughan also met about 50 victims of a heavy down pour last Wednesday, whose houses were affected by floods damaging property yet to be estimated.
They attributed the flood to the construction of a petrol filling station and a private public place of convenience on a waterway at the Kasoa-Obom road blocking the flow of rainwater into the Okrudu River. The DCE promised that a drain would be constructed in front of the filling station to serve as a temporary measure while efforts were being made to solve the problem once and for all.
