Correspondence from Ashanti Region
Barima Fredua Agyeman Ababio II, the Kenyasihene in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has called on media practitioners in Ghana, particularly those in the Ashanti Region, to exercise circumspection in their reporting and prioritize accuracy.
He emphasized the crucial role of the media in national development and urged them to avoid sensationalism and the spread of misinformation.
Barima Fredua Agyeman Ababio II made the appeal while chairing the 'Thanksgiving & Get-together' ceremony of the Ashanti Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), held at the Longford Event Centre in Kwadaso, Kumasi. He commended journalists in the Ashanti Region for their dedication to the progress of Asanteman and Ghana as a whole.
"You (journalists) are our key partners in development, and no success can be achieved without your support," the Kenyasihene stated. "It is, therefore, very important that you do not allow people to use your platform to tarnish the reputation of others, especially politicians and traditional leaders (Nananom)."
He stressed the importance of verifying information before publication, urging journalists to always cross-check their facts before going on air or publishing.
He added, "Asanteman and Ghana need you, so please be circumspect in your reportage at all times."
The Kenyasihene also encouraged the media to prioritize the country’s interests and strive for balanced reporting. "Do not rush to publish your stories and later be forced to issue apologies and retractions," he cautioned.
Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene echoed the Kenyasihene's sentiments, commending the media for their contribution to peace and development in the region.
He pledged to collaborate with the media and emphasized the importance of adhering to professional ethics.
Ashanti Regional GJA Chairman, Kingsley E. Hope, used the event to reiterate his call for justice for media personnel who were attacked during the Ashanti Regional Council of State election.
He thanked various stakeholders, including Kofi Job Construction CEO, Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua (NPP General Secretary), and Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah (COKA), for their continued support. He also expressed gratitude to Dr. Amoakohene for his participation and donation.
