WORK on the Keta Sea Defence Project has begun with the construction of the road from Havedzi to Keta to facilitate the movement of heavy equipment for the dredging of the lagoon.
A 12-unit quarters for consultants and technical officers has also been completed at Keta.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr I. K. Adjei-Mensah, was conducted round the project site where workers were busily engaged in construction activities by the Project Manager of the Great Lakes Dredge Dock Company, Mr Gary Schack. Great Lakes is the construction company engaged on the dredging and road works.
The Minister also visited the Metsrikasa Quarry where mobilisation of equipment was in progress to beef up technical support for the road works.
The Minister was accompanied on the tour by his two deputies, Alhaji Amadu Seidu and Alex P. Akuffo, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr S. Q. Banor and the Keta District Chief Executive, Mrs. Eugenia Kumassah.
Mr Schack said the company would build a flood control structure to provide relief from extreme flooding conditions for inhabitants around the lagoon and reclaim about 350 hectares of land for residents of Keta, Vodza and Kedzi to put up their houses.
When completed, the project will facilitate increased food production, fishing, commerce and living conditions of the people of Keta and the surrounding areas.
Mr. Schack said the construction of the roads which was originally scheduled to be completed in 54 weeks
