Keta and environs appeal for completion of sea defence project

Keta (VR), Feb. 2, GNA - The people of Keta and its

surrounding villages in the Volta Region are appealing to the

government to speed up work on the Keta Sea Defence Project. The Ghana News Agency, which toured the area, noted that the

main road, which links Keta to surrounding villages like Dzita-

Anyanui, Agbledomi, Bomigo, Zanu-Tunu, Atiteti and Akplornu

Torkor, had deteriorated.

Commuters told the GNA that they risked their lives on daily

basis while using the road. They said the situation had become very dangerous, as the road

was almost covered by the sea and motorists who tried to move in

and out risked plunging into the sea. The other side of the road is so sandy that only experienced

drivers with four-wheel drive vehicles can use it. Residents of Keta and Anloga are, therefore, appealing to

government to complete the work on time so they could go about

their daily activities since the delay was hampering their economic

development.

The Keta sea defence project became necessary when the tidal

waves and coastal erosion began destroying the area and claiming

land and property. When the project is completed it would check erosion, reclaim

land from the Keta Lagoon and also provide space for inhabitants to

rebuild homes that were lost to erosion. It is also expected to serve as flood control for Keta Lagoon to

provide relief for the people living around there.
