Residents of Lowcost a suburb the Ketu District Assembly are complaining bitterly about the district Assemblies inability to clear a huge heap of refuse that have is posing health hazards to the in the area.
The MP for the area, Hon Albert K. Zigah, who has ever had the occasion to bring up the situation affecting his constituents on the floor of Parliament, told this paper that “the situation is very deplorable. “The situation, as bad as it is now, is even better because I’ve had to be engaging some of the youth in the constituency to clear the place periodically,” Hon Zigah pointed out.
The over-flowing refuse dump is sited very close to the District hospital and also near one of the prominent hotels in the area, Hotel Makavo. Hon Albert Zigah asserted that about two weeks ago he had to call Mr.Okudjeto Obed, who is the manager of the Hotel Makavo and whose Hotel is just about 100meters away from the refuse dump and asked that he should use his position as a government appointee to the Ketu District Assembly to get the assembly to do what they ought to do to clear the refuse in the area. Meanwhile, the NPP chairman in the constituency, Mr. Anthony Ayivor, has stated that it is not the responsibility of the District Assembly to see to it that the refuse is cleared.
Said Mr. Ayivor, “there is no such fund in the District and it is not the duty of the district assembly to do that therefore it is rather the duty of the Member of Parliament to clear the refuse in his constituency.” Meanwhile, all efforts to talk to the Ketu District Chief Executive, Hon Justice Kudjo, during the weekend was unsuccessful.
