The family of Stanley Ahadzi, the 24-year-old who was shot dead by an off-duty police officer following an altercation over transport fare, is demanding justice.

The deceased, Stanley Ahadzi, was due to travel overseas to further his education when the unfortunate incident happened.

According to a report by GHOne, Stanley ordered a ride-hailing driver for his girlfriend from Ablekuma to Koans Estate, near Kuntunse, at around 3 am on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

In an interview with the deceased’s girlfriend, whose identity has been concealed, she said the driver slapped Stanley.

“He slapped Stanley. He used the gun to hit the back of Stanley’s neck. Due to the hit, Stanley bent down and tried removing his shirt, to help him run if the suspect tries to harm him. The suspect shot the deceased when he had bent over.

“The driver ran to his car after shooting Stanley. When he went back to his car, he said ‘I have killed someone.' I had run to hide so I came to check up on him. I called out to him and I saw his heart was still beating. He held on to my hand so I told the driver he wasn’t dead so he should help us take him to the nearest hospital,“ she recounted.

The girlfriend further said that the deceased never engaged in an argument with the driver, contrary to reports speculated on social media.

Family members disclosed that they got to know of the incident on social media after images of the scene had gone viral.

Stanley’s death was confirmed when his mother and his uncle rushed to the scene of the incident, only to see his dead body.

Stanley’s cousin, Delali Wisdom, who spoke to GHOne TV, said “It was on Sunday early morning. We all woke up from bed and we never knew anything happened, so, I was using my phone in the morning and was scrolling through. I saw a newsflash on someone’s TikTok and I went through to see a body lying down in a pool of blood. Quickly, I called one of my uncles and asked him what was happening which he said he didn’t know. I forwarded the picture to him. He called other uncles who said they had also received the same news.

“… His mom and one uncle went to the scene to find out whether what they're hearing was true. Upon reaching there, they realised the body was Stanley Ahadzi’s body,” he said.

Meanwhile, the suspect, 25-year-old Constable Smith Gyekyi, has been remanded into police custody by a Kaneshie District Court.

He is facing murder charges.

According to the prosecution, the suspect first fired a warning shot and later shot the deceased.

The suspect subsequently reported himself to the Amasaman Divisional Police and was detained.
