The Member of Parliament for Asokwa Constituency in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has descended heavily on Electoral Commission (EC) boss Dr. Afari-Gyan, describing him as a “grossly incompetent person” who is not qualified to hold his position.
The Asokwa MP and former Mayor of Kumasi has therefore called for the immediate sack of Dr. Afari-Gyan, predicting that history would treat the EC boss harshly. “He will go for a young and talented person to head the EC soon”, he said.
Wondering why Dr. Afari-Gyan was able to rise through the ranks to head a powerful body like the EC, the outraged looking Law Maker asked, “How was Afari-Gyan able to become the chairman of the EC”.
Mincing no words, Hon. Kofi Jumah said Dr. Afari-Gyan had done nothing significant to promote the EC, and that the EC chairman's past actions always portrayed a person that was incompetent and did not deserve to head the EC.
Hon. Jumah, who was addressing the media at a soiree he organized, observed that Ghana has succeeded in holding five national elections in the past because Ghanaians, by nature, were peace-loving people who hated war and not because of the competence of Dr. Afar-Gyan.
He stated that but for the peace-loving nature of Ghanaians, the country would have been plunged into war long ago due to Dr. Afari-Gyan's incompetence and awkward behaviour.
The Asokwa MP said he would praise Ghanaians for the peace that the country was joying now, insisting that nobody should exalt the EC boss for the successive elections held in the country.
Mr. Jumah said Dr. Afari-Gyan's incompetence was what made him push for the creation of 45 new seats, as it was clear to every sound minded-person that the timing was bad. As such, this was an irresponsible decision on the part of the commission.
The Asokwa MP said it was wrong for the EC boss to state that he created the new constituencies because the government had created new districts, stressing the EC, as an autonomous body, should not be taking orders from any quarters.
He said Ghanaians abroad were being denied the opportunity to vote mainly because the EC boss was incompetent, adding that his reckless decisions and actions were not auguring well for the transformation of the EC.
Hon. Jumah said Dr. Afari-Gyan has not introduced single programme or policy to transform the EC. He argued that the biometric registration and the usage of transparent boxes during elections came to fruition following pressure from outside quarters.
The Asokwa MP said Dr. Afari-Gyan usually pops up to claim glory after a policy which the general public has forced on the EC became successful. He urged Ghanaians to make the coming polls successful.
