Samuel Koku Anyidoho, the former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called out the current leadership of the party over what he considers a lack of recognition and observation of the June 4 political uprising.

In an interview with the US-based station, Sky 102.1FM, Koku Anyidoho observed that there has been a deliberate attempt by certain elements within the party to dissociate the NDC from its tradition of probity and accountability.

According to him, the ethos of the June 4 coup forms the foundation of the NDC, and anyone who claims to be a member of the party must commit to observing June 4 and abiding by its principles.

While conceding that the June 4th political uprising had its excesses, Koku Anyidoho believes that these excesses are not enough to prevent the NDC from marking it annually.

He criticized some personalities, including the flagbearer of the party, John Dramani Mahama, for ignoring what he views to be a key element of the NDC’s history.

"As a political party, June 4 is part of our tradition. The NPP still respects the Danquah-Busia tradition because it's part of the party. People still think that June 4 is no longer relevant because Rawlings is no more, but as long as we are NDC, June 4 is part of our tradition.

"As a party, we have to continue to remember him and the ideals of probity and accountability. We are a social democratic institution, so we must hold on to these principles. Despite the excesses of June 4, we still have to observe it because it's the foundation of our party.

"As far as I am concerned, June 4th gave birth to the NDC, so we must respect that tradition. No society grows without its history," Koku said.

This year's June 4th celebration was marked with public lectures on the theme "Unity, Loyalty, and Vigilance for 2024."

The lecture was held at Ajumako, the district capital of the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam Constituency of the Central Region, as part of the 45th-anniversary celebration of the June 4th uprising.
