Residents of Konongo in the Ashanti Region are raising concerns about the prevailing ‘galamsey’ activities in close proximity to the Kumasi-Konongo highway stretching through the town.

Checks by some media houses revealed the presence of excavators and other mining equipment actively engaged in the act in broad daylight.

Speaking to the press on the disturbing development, Head Pastor of the New Life Church of Light Reverend Raphael Oppong accused local leaders of being complicit in the act.

“It seems we don’t have leaders in this country. I can’t be convinced by anyone that this illegal activity is done without the knowledge of local authorities. Our leaders are not prepared to tackle this galamsey challenge therefore, they pretend as if they’re against it.

“Just take a look at how the miners are destroying our water bodies with impunity, and no one is calling them to order. We will take it upon ourselves and organize a massive demonstration against the leaders,” the reverend angrily said.

Other residents who spoke to the media agreed that the ‘galamsey activities’ presented a danger to the community, criticizing government for its failure to address the menace head-on.
