Krachi Union calls for reconstruction of road

The Krachi Union in Kumasi has called on the government to reconstruct and tar the 96-kilometre Atebubu-Kojokrom road, the only major road linking Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo to the northern part of the Volta region.

Making the call at a meeting in Kumasi, the union regretted that successive governments had neglected the people of the area as if they were not part of Ghana.

The union said a journey, which should take not more than two hours now took three days in most cases while in the rainy season only tractors ply the route since drivers withdraw their services.

The road apart from facilitating the carting of foodstuffs such as yams and maize and fish from the Volta Lake, it served as a short link from Kumasi to Bimbilla and Yendi in the Northern region.

The union urged the Brong-Ahafo Regional Co-ordinating Council, MP for Sene and the District Assembly to get the road reconstructed and tarred.

It also complained about the removal of the pontoon, which ferried vehicles and passengers across the Volta Lake from Kete-Krachi to Kojokrom for over one year now.

The union noted that the Volta Lake Transport Company, which was operating the pontoon, had not said when it would put another one in operation.

The outboard motor boat being operated by the company posed real danger to the safety of the people, the union said, pointing out that even though no accident had been recorded, the authorities must not wait until a major catastrophe before they take action.

Getting the pontoon back would facilitate the easy transportation of foodstuffs, fish and passengers in safety, the union added.
