Kufuor returns from Information Technology summit

Accra, Dec 15, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor arrived in Accra on Sunday, from Geneva after attending the world summit on the Information Society.

Briefing newsmen, Mr Albert Kan Dapaa, Minister of Communication, Science and Technology, who accompanied President Kufuor said the meeting attempted to ensure access to information technology for all countries.

He said "the previous technological and industrial revolutions were not well planned, leading to the creation of the haves and have not in the global community".

There was therefore the need to ensure the basic infrastructure needed for a global information technology revolution, Mr Kan Dapaa said.

He said President Kufuor's speech at the summit, called for the establishment of a Solidarity Fund, into which all countries would contribute to assist developing nations to put up their own infrastructure.

The next World Summit on the Information Society would be held in 2005, in Tunis to assess progress made, the Minister said, adding that, Ghana was well prepared it.

President Kufuor also addressed the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, which expressed interest in doing business in Ghana and met the Ghanaian community in Switzerland.

At the airport to meet President Kufuor were Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Ministers of State, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and the IGP, Nana Owusu Nsiah.
