Leader of the People’s National Convention (PNC) has revealed that former president John Agyekum Kufuor approached him to become his vice presidential candidate prior to the 2000 elections.

Dr Edward Nasigrie Mahama says he turned down Mr Kufuor’s overtures after the New Patriotic Party refused to enter talks with the PNC, revealing that “they wanted me to defect instead”.

Dr Mahama, who doubles as gynecologist explains, he rejected the proposal as a result of his conviction and determination to help the PNC win political power.

“Yes, there was an approach from Mr Kufuor at the time. He asked me to become his running mate, but I told him point blank that he should, first of all, speak to my party which he refused.

“His [Mr Kufuor] idea was for me to resign outright from the PNC and join the NPP and I thought it was wrong for me to do that,” he said on Okay FM on Monday.

He, however, expressed his desire to serve in President Akufo-Addo’s administration whenever he is called upon to contribute his quota to national development.

According to him, the aspiration of most Ghanaians was to develop a better Ghana, and he will never decline whenever he is called upon to lend a hand to the country’s development.

“If President Akufo-Addo, says ‘Edward this is the area I want you to help,’ I will assess myself and see what his expectations are and if I am capable, I will definitely take up that responsibility,” he added.
