Kumasi, April 28, GNA - The Concerned Citizens' Association of Kumasi, has condemned the assault and brutality on residents of North Suntreso, a suburb of Kumasi, by some unidentified soldiers on Tuesday. The association, however, commended the Headquarters of Northern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), for swiftly establishing a special military investigating team, to look into circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident.
The group urged the GAF to go beyond the enquiry and ensure that the perpetrators of the act were punished.
The displeasure was expressed in a statement signed by Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, Chairman of the association.
The Concerned Citizens said the incident was: "unfair, inhuman and an affront to efforts aimed at maintaining peace and order in the country since many of the residents sustained various degrees of injuries as a result of the incident".
The association said the action of the soldiers numbering 40, was as a result of a confrontation in which their colleague was lynched at North Suntreso last Monday.
The association said it was of the conviction that as security personnel, the soldiers should have exercised restraint even in the face of the confusion that led to the death of their colleague, and followed laid down procedures to address the issue instead of taking the law into their own hands.
The group advised all victims of the brutality and assault to report the case to the police for investigations to be carried out. The statement recalled that," some three or four years ago, soldiers mercilessly beat up some residents of Anloga in Kumasi under the pretext that their colleague had been assaulted ".
