Kumasi needs new Mayor – MP

Following the call of the Asanteman Council for the removal of the mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, from office, the Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Elizabeth Agyeman, has advised the president to make a new nomination for the position.

Mr Kojo Bonsu on Monday July 4 failed to appear before the Asanteman Council to answer to a few concerns, a situation which compelled the chiefs to declare they could no longer tolerate the metropolitan chief executive nor work with him for disrespecting them.

Mr Bonsu, prior to Monday’s declaration by the chiefs, had been under pressure from members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to resign amid allegations of embezzling the assembly’s funds and disrespecting assembly members.

Airing her views on the matter on Accra100.5FM’s morning show, Ghana Yensom, on Tuesday July 5, Ms Agyeman accused Mr Bonsu of acting unilaterally as head of the assembly. She said the mayor had become an unpopular figure among those he worked with, which should have been a signal to the president to remove him from office.

She added that the bad blood between the mayor and the assembly had stalled developments in the metropolis, a situation that was compounded by the assembly’s inability to elect a presiding member. She, therefore, said the decision of the Asanteman Council to ostracise him cannot be linked to the already stalled development in the city.

“At this stage, the necessary thing to do is to bring in a new person [mayor]…” she counselled.
