Kwabenya Police Attack: Two escapees given 30-month jail sentence

An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh has sentenced two of the suspects who escaped during the attack on the Kwabenya police station to 30 months each in prison concurrently.

The suspects, Atta Kwadwo and Prince Osei, were convicted on the counts of conspiring to escape from lawful custody and escaping from lawful custody.

On Sunday, January 21, 2018, seven suspected criminals broke cell at the Kwabenya police station. The seven suspects were assisted by a group of armed men in their escape which resulted in the death of one police officer at the station.

Twelve persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on five counts of possessing firearms without lawful authority, abetment to possessing firearms, conspiracy to commit crime, to wit: escape from lawful custody, escape from lawful custody and abetment to escape from lawful custody.

Ten of the suspects pleaded not guilty to all the charges, while Prince Osei aka Bebe and Atta Kwadwo pleaded guilty to the charges of escape from lawful custody and abetment to escape from lawful custody.

The counsel for the other accused persons filed an application for bail it was refused by the court.

The case has been adjourned to Monday, the 26th of February, 2018.
