In his efforts to ensure Ghana's attainment of a sustainable middle-income status and self-reliance, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah initiated several projects aimed at boosting the socio-economic fortunes of its citizens.

One key initiative was an affordable housing project targeting low-income earners in Accra in the 1960s.

Despite only ruling as president for six years, the impact of this housing project was considered crucial for many citizens.

Dubbed the 'Nkrumah Flats' by many, the affordable housing project was first introduced by Dr. Nkrumah in 1958. However, there has been limited information on its current activities or status over the years.

In the 1960s, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah also introduced the "Nkrumah's Buy Your Own Homes' Scheme," a project aimed at addressing the growing public dissatisfaction with existing housing policies.

This issue prompted the president to personally introduce the policy to tackle the housing deficit at the time.

During his address to the National Assembly to introduce the housing project, Dr. Nkrumah stated, "Over the last few months, my government has become increasingly aware of public dissatisfaction over housing policy. I regard the whole question of housing as so important and urgent that I feel it is appropriate for me to introduce the new proposal myself."

The core of the housing policy introduced by Dr. Nkrumah included a groundbreaking offer: a "five per cent down and twenty years to pay" plan for the purchase of government estate houses.

This strategic approach aimed to make homeownership more accessible and affordable for a broader segment of the population.
