An Accra High Court will this Wednesday (December 18) hear a case in which a leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) who is also a Member of Parliament (MP), Agyare Koi Larbi has sued the Editor-in-Chief of the Crusading Guide, Kweku Baako and two of his reporters.
He is claiming general damages for malicious libel and special damages for loss of business.
In a statement filed by the MP, it referred to publications in the Crusading Guide between January and February 2001 headed “Koi Larbi is a fraud – Nungua Chiefs”, “Koi Larbi Is A Thief – Tse We Elder” and “Kufuor’s Name Used In Demolition Exercise, Koi-Larbi mentioned by Jade’s ABC as brain behind the action”.
Mr. Koi Larbi said the publications were false, malicious and had brought his reputation into disrepute. Apart from the general and special damages, the MP is also seeking for a declaration that the publications were libelous; an order for retraction, another order for apology to be made in three other newspapers and a perpetual injunction to restrain defendants from further libelous publications.
In their statement of defense, Baako and his two reporters stated that most of the publications were from various media events like a press conference by the Nungua Traditional Council to comment on their experiences with the MP and his company, Koiwah Investment.
