LIVE UPDATES: Akufo-Addo delivers second State of the Nation Address

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The much-awaited presentation of the second State of the Nation Address by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is underway in parliament.

Having chastised the NDC administration for their deep roots in corruption among other things in his maiden SONA and pledging to deal with its very core and restore Ghana to its rightful state, the public anticipates the contents of this year’s SONA will reveal to what extent the NPP has dealt with the country’s woes and how much it has achieved in its first year in office.

President Akufo-Addo in his maiden SONA stated his commitment to developing a shrunken economy inherited from the NDC administration with the introduction of innovative policies in various sectors; health, education, agriculture and the likes.

For a ‘man in a hurry’, it was his resolve to boost the confidence of the private sector to invest in the economy, transform the agriculture sector particularly through the planting for food and jobs initiative, to revamp the energy sector and resolve the country’s power crisis, fully roll out the Free SHS policy to develop the education sector and to deal with the canker of corruption among other things.

A year on and the President, in his second SONA, is expected to touch on critical areas of the economy, highlighting feats and falls from last year and projecting major targets for the year 2018.

The State of the Nation address is presented by a sitting President annually in fulfilment of Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution that stipulates that: “The President shall, at the beginning of each session of parliament and before the dissolution of parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation.”

This will give Ghanaians an appreciable knowledge of the true state of affairs of the economy and the country as a whole as well as give better grounds on which the NPP government can be assessed moving forward.
