The final of the 2017 National Science and Maths Quiz is currently happening live as it sees an all-boys affair with representation from Kumasi, Cape Coast and Accra at the National Theater
Old students of Adisadel College, Prempeh College and Saint Thomas Aquinas have thronged the venue in their numbers to cheer their alma mata to victory at this year’s 2017 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) finale.
The longest running quiz in the country has generated a lot of discussions on social media especially as the various schools gear up for the thrilling encounter.
One interesting fact about this year’s finals is that all three schools are past winners of the competition with Adisadel College being the defending champions.
Kumasi based Prempeh College was the first school to win the maiden edition of the competition in 1994 and has since won three more titles, 1996 and recently in 2015.
Adisadel College, the defending Champions won their only title 12 months ago after they emerged winners with 44 points to out close contender Opoku Ware with 6 points whilst Mfantsipim placed third with 37 points.
In 2013, St. Thomas Aquinas became the third school from Accra to win the tournament after they steadily converted the trophy with comfortable 13-point advantage.

How the Quiz will roll out
Round 1- General Questions
This comprises of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. This round tests students’ understanding of scientific concepts and theories, especially those that reflect Science and Mathematics, as applied to our everyday life situations. Here, the contestants apply the science they learn at school to their immediate surroundings in practical terms.
Round 3 - Problem of the Day
This is usually a complex question given to all schools at the same time and requires the use of multiple concepts or formulae. Schools have three (3) minutes to solve the problem as a team and hand in their written solution to the Quiz Mistress to grade. One student from each school would then put the school’s solution on the board for adjudication. The Quiz Mistress explains the “Ideal Solution” to the problem as proposed by the team of Consultants, before awarding marks to the schools. “The Problem of the Day” is worth 10 points.
Round 4 - True or False
The Quiz Mistress makes a statement to each school and the team is to answer if the statement is true or false.
Round 5 - Riddles
There are four (4) riddles in this round and each question is open to all schools. A series of clues to each riddle is given and the first school to press the bell is allowed to answer. There is a weighting system on scoring, according to the number of clues given. Answering on the first clue gives five (5) points; on the 2nd clue gives four (4) points; and thereafter, three (3) points.
