The swearing in of Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye as acting President is underway in Parliament.
This will give Prof. Ocquaye the constitutional mandate to officially met out all Presidential duties in the stead of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as both leaders are currently out of the country.
President Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to leave the country for Liberia today while the Vice-President is already in the UK undergoing further medical treatment.
A statement released January 19 and signed by First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu indicated that all members of Parliament are to convene Sunday 21st January, 2018 for the event to ensure a smooth temporal transition.
This is in accordance with Article 60 (11) and (12) of the constitution which says;
(11) Where the President and the Vice-President are both unable to perform the functions of the President, the Speaker of Parliament shall perfom those functions until the President or the Vice-President is able to perfom those fuctions or a new President assumes office, as the case may be.
(12) The Speaker shall, before commencing to perform the functions of the President under clause (11) of this article, take and subscribe the oath set out in relation to the office of President.
