Labour group congratulates Mills

Accra, Jan. 5, GNA - The Ghana Federation of Labour on Monday congratulated Professor John Evans Atta Mills, President-elect, for his historic victory in the election.

The Federation, in a statement signed in Accra by Mr Abraham Koomson, General Secretary, also acknowledged the contest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the exemplary tolerance demonstrated by civil society during and after the elections.

While acknowledging the several challenges awaiting the new administration, the Federation urged government to strive to apply the "all inclusive governance strategy, not forgetting organised labour" to ensure successful implementation of policies for the growth of the economy.

It said the history of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) clearly illustrated that it was set up as a party of the working class with organised labour and the deprived in society as the bedrock. "As a social democratic party the NDC is obliged to open up for labour to play its strategic role in the pursuance of the ideology which takes on board the concerns of the working class and its allies." Specifically, there would be the absolute need for deeper consultations among the stakeholders in formulation and implementation of policies, the statement added.
