Some concerned citizens of Atwima Mponua District in Ashanti, have appealed to Mr. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area to use his influence to get an ambulance for the District.
The lack of an ambulance at the District Hospital, had led to many avoidable deaths, especially among pregnant women, accident victims and the critically ill needing emergency medical services, according to the group.
Mr John Brenya, spokesman for the concerned citizens, who made the appeal through the Ghana News Agency, at Nyinahin, said ambulances had to be called from Bibiani in the Western North Region, when the need arose, but this delayed due to the long distance.
He said private transport operators who were called to in to assist in such cases, had also taken advantage of the situation to charge exorbitant fares from relatives of patients, needing ambulance services, to referral centres such as Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, for emergency treatment.
The drivers charged between GHC 700.00 and GHc 1,000.00 to transport critically ill patients to KATH.
Mr. Brenya stressed the need for the MP to liaise with the Ministry of Health to provide the District an efficient ambulance service, to help improve emergency health care in the area.
