Lack of streetlights facilitate crime

Accra, Aug. 16, GNA - The Assemblyman of the Osu Alata on Monday observed that crime and other anti-social activities had been occurring in the Township at night as a result of the lack of streetlights. He said as a result of this he had in collaboration with others embarked upon an initiative to light up the township at night. The Assemblyman said this when he inaugurated a streetlight project, which forms part of a programme to modernise and beautify the Osu Alata Township.

The inauguration of the project, which is a collaborative initiative by Nii Lantey Wellington, Assemblyman of the area, Nii Kwashie Aniefi IV, Osu Alata Dzasetse, Plan Ghana and the Christian Council of Ghana, also forms part of activities to climax this year's Osu Homowo festival celebrations. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Wellington said the 250 watts and 400 watts lights, which numbered 16 in all, and cost 650,000 cedis each, had at the moment been placed at the most strategic points of the Township.

He said although the community needed 40 lights in all, funds available were not sufficient for that, adding that the area was deprived and lacked such amenities as toilets, a good drainage system among other basic amenities.

The Assemblyman, however, acknowledged that although the lights were not enough, they would minimise the incidence of crime at night and also enable the youth, who did not have electricity to gather underneath them to study at night.

He urged residents of the town to protect and maintain the lights. Nii Aniefi called on the Government to assist in the development of the town by building schools and constructing roads. The Osu Alata Dzasetse said although the township needed many more amenities, such needs would be dealt step by step and urged Ghanaians to join in the celebration of the Homowo festival saying: "Homowo is just a thanksgiving festival to God and not a fetish event."
