Late Aliu Mahama to be buried at Military Cemetery, Osu

Former Vice-President Alhaji Aliu Mahama who died Friday, November 16, 2012, will be buried at the Military Cemetery, Osu in Accra.

The burial will take place on Saturday afternoon after a short Islamic rituals at the State House.

The family of the late former Vice-President Alhaji Aliu Mahama had indicated they wanted him to be buried at his birth place in Yendi.

The family said it was only proper and fitting for the remains of the former Veep to be laid to rest in his birth place.

But the state has decided that the mortal remains of Aliu Mahama will be laid to rest at the Military Cemetery, Osu.

Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced this at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The late former Vice-President’s 92-year-old mother, Hajia Mariama Mahama has not yet been informed of the death.

Family members fear that breaking the news to the frail old-lady may lead to shock.

Joy News’ Northern Regional Correspondent, Mohammed Hashmin reported that somber crowds had gathered at the family house of the late Aliu at Yendi.

He said the mood in the northern town of Yendi was one of morose brooding and sober reflection over the loss.

Alhaji Aliu died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital at about 9:45 Friday, according to Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

He had been on admission at the hospital for about a week. The nature of his condition was not exactly known.
