Late MP's family receives 100 million cedis

Accra, Aug. 26, GNA - The Vanguard Assurance Company Limited on Thursday presented a cheque for 100 million cedis to the family of Mr C.O Nyanor, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Upper Denkyira.

The donation, received by the Clerk of Parliament, Mr Ken Tachie, was in fulfilment of a pledge by the Company to offer a 100 million cedis death cover for each MP, the Speaker, the Clerk of Parliament and two Deputy Clerks of the House.

Mr Nyanor's family are the first to benefit from the pledge the Company made early this year under its Comprehensive Welfare Policy for MPs in the event of death.

The Speaker, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey, said: "Parliament did not pay any premium...it was entirely free and a demonstration of commitment to parliamentary democracy, which should be applauded."

He thanked the Company and urged other organisations to support Parliament, saying serving in Parliament was a sacrifice. Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, commended the Company for delivering on its promises.

He said for an indigenous Company to brave the odds and bureaucracy to rise to the top in the business world was an achievement worthy of recognition.

He said the donation was not to remind the bereaved family of their loss but rather to console them and ease their burden. Mr Mahama Baba, Chief Executive Officer of the Company, said with the support of their re-insurers, they had been able to fulfil their promise as part of their social responsibility.

Present at the meeting were the family of Mr Nyanor and Ms Hannah Tetteh, National Democratic Congress MP for Awutu-Senya, who represented the Minority Leader, Alban Bagbin.
