A ranking member of the committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs in Parliament, Hon Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni has advocated the removal of the law on causing financial loss to the state.
According to him, the trend at which the law is being used in the country, could discourage programs initiated by certain public officials, for fear of being prosecuted under the law. Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni told Peace FM on Monday that, anybody could face the full rigours of the law on causing financial loss to the state, if they are unable account for an amount of money spent, no matter how minimal it would be. He said though the law aims at protecting state property from public officials who enrich themselves, it would become a bad law, if people refuse to initiate projects which would involve the use of funds.
He stated that, the removal of the law would not create a vacuum in the law books, since provisions on embezzlement and stealing, could be used to monitor the works of public officials. He however urged the media to wage a campaign on this issue, the best interest of the country.
