The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana has cautioned the public to be cautious and not fall victim to the spell of academic institutions awarding degrees for which they have not been certified.

According to Professor Ernest Aryeetey, professionals must strive to excel in their various fields and not be motivated by piling up undeserving titles from questionable institutions.

“We are concerned about the way titles are being abused in this country, normally we expect a bishop to be a priest, in the same way we expect a professor to be teaching in the university...but in Ghana you can be in the civil service and be a professor,” Prof. Aryeetey said during a special congregation to award Honorary doctorate degrees to 14 citizens who have excelled in their various fields of work.

The awardees included academics, politicians, traders, entrepreneurs and popular Ghanaian heart surgeon Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng and other public servants.

Rojo Mettle-Nunoo, Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu, Professor Akua Kuenyehia among others were also awarded honorary doctorate degrees.
