Accra, Nov. 19 GNA - The University of Ghana, Legon on Friday presented certificates and awards to 99 of its workers, who retired this year after many years of meritorious service to the institution.
The retirees were from the University of Ghana, Legon Campus, Noguchi Research Institute and the Ghana Medical School, Korle-Bu.
They included 38 senior employees, 37 junior employees and 24 Senior Members comprising lecturers and administrators, who have served the University between seven and 43 years.
Employees who served the University for 30 years and above took home refrigerators, those between 20 years 29 years were given 21-inch colour television sets.
The rest who served from and between 10 years to 20 years received radio cassette players and standing fans, while those of 10 years and below got radio cassette players.
Speaking at the function, Professor Kwadwo Asensu-Okyere, Vice Chancellor of the University, expressed appreciation to the retirees for their hard work and dedication to the development of the University over the years.
He urged those to be engaged on contracts by the University to still keep up with the good work they started.
He urged the workers of the University to contribute to the pension fund to make the scheme sustainable so that they could derive the full benefit when they went on retirement.
Professor Asensu-Okyere also announced the enrolment of the first batch of engineering students, who would take their four-year Bachelor of Science Degree since the inception of the university. He said the University started vigorous infrastructure development within the last three years to reduce the accommodation problems facing the institution.
Mr Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of the University Council, commended the retirees for their sacrifice and devotion to work as well as helping to churn-out graduates to man various sensitive positions.
