Legon workers on strike to back salary demand

The University of Ghana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) and the local Teachers and Educational Workers Union on Tuesday started a two-day industrial action to back their demand for payment of the 15 per cent salary increment the government announced in May and arrears.

Their action is a follow up to the one-month ultimatum they gave to the government and the University authorities for the payment.

Mr James Madakena, a member of UGSSA Council, told the Ghana News Agency that if the money were not paid by Wednesday a decisive action would be taken before the end of the week.

The industrial action has affected academic work especially the on-going interim assessment examinations expected to end this month before the first semester examination.

All the lecture rooms, the central library (Balme) and departmental libraries have been closed.
