Deputy Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has charged Ghanaians to celebrate the media for serving the nation loyally over the years.

According to him the media in Ghana always go about their normal activities without hindrance from any quarters and their contributions he said, quickens the society in advancement, as such, the only way Ghanaians can appreciate their efforts is to celebrate them.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb after the closing section of the World Press Freedom Day held in Accra, Mr Oppong Nkrumah stated that “there is the need to occasionally introspect, take time and look at the kind of work we do and ask ourselves whether there are ways we can improve or risks that journalists can guard against.”

“We as media practitioners are always working, but what this tells us is that we have an opportunity to spend some time and look within and decide for ourselves if our practice or profession needs some tweaking here and there.”

World Press Freedom Day

Every year, UNESCO organizes a national celebration to mark the global World Press Freedom Day in one country. This year’s event was commemorated in Accra, Ghana. The theme for this year’s celebration was: “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law.”

UNESCO uses the day to celebrate “the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence, and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.”
