Radio Personality Kwami Sefa Kayi known in the media circles as ‘Chairman General’ has posited that Ghana as a country needs to put in more efforts in holding leaders accountable for their actions.

Speaking in an interview with Rev Erskine on the Y Leaderboard Series, he stated that while the country through state institutions, the media and civil society try to hold leaders accountable, some factors are working against such efforts.

“We have the media to help and other state institutions to help. As to whether we have successfully executed all of that I don’t know. But quite often there is a certain suspicion along the line. Don’t forget that as we have the state institutions there will be loopholes that people can exploit.

I don’t think any country in the world has held their leaders accountable a hundred percent. Luckily for us, we have institutions and civil societies. All in all, if you look at the entire landscape we have what it takes to hold our leaders accountable. Recently, however, we have been talking about monetization in our politics such as the recent NPP primaries. It is cyclical. Unfortunately for us, because we like to so politicize everything as Ghanaians, it is our culture. It is an innate thing that we have grown up with. If we have evidence from the 50s till today, it tells us that we are probably inherently corrupt people”.

On the efforts in holding our leaders accountable, Kwame assured, “I don’t think we should give up on our country because those who laid down their lives for us today did it because they didn’t give up. Some of them died in the process, lost their families, lost their money and businesses but they believed in the bigger picture. It is the reason why we are here today. So, much as it may seem doom and gloom I’d rather we don’t shut the door. We should just leave a small crack. We may not go through that crack but posterity may find that”.

As a political talk show host, Kwami Sefa Kayi believes in accountability and responsibility.
