The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, believes the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey can be won if it is not politicized.
He holds the view that until the menace is treated with a nationalistic approach, the fight against it cannot be won.
He also called on the chiefs to support the government’s effort in dealing with the menace.
Dr. Dacosta Aboagye noted that no individual or administration can entirely combat the menace without the combined effort and commitment of other stakeholders.
Going into the 2024 elections, Dr. Dacosta Aboagye said there is a need for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and John Mahama to sign a pact to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
According to him, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is determined to sign a pact to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
“His views on illegal mining are crystal clear.
"He’s described certain strategies several times.
"He is prepared to sign all necessary agreements,” he indicated.
“Our solemn pledge as a government is to ensure we stay consistent with this pledge and harness existing potentials to reap the full benefits of building a very resolute small-scale mining sector that will be admired not only in the sub-region but globally,” Dr. Dacosta Aboagye said.
“It can only succeed if it is a truly national battle, which no one seeks to exploit for political gain, as we saw in the last election.”
He spoke in an interview with Accra-based Original TV.
